Why does my citation data change between scans?
AI answers are generated fresh each time, so citations naturally flicker between scans even when nothing changed on your site. Single-scan swings are noise; consistent Lost states across scans are signal.
Ask an AI engine the same question twice and you rarely get the same words back. The answer is generated on the spot, from a model that samples among good responses and a source pool that shifts as the web updates. Your citation data inherits that behavior: a brand can be named in Monday’s answer and absent from Wednesday’s with no change in the underlying reality.
Model updates add bigger, rarer jumps. When an engine ships a new model version or reweights its retrieval, whole categories of answers reshuffle at once. Those events show up as several prompts moving in the same scan, and they hit competitors too; the Competitors tab helps you see whether a shift was about you or about everyone.
Citably’s design assumes this noise. Answers are recorded so you can read what actually changed, the Won, Lost, Held, and New states track movement honestly, and the Citation Health Index rewards stability over lucky snapshots. The reading discipline stays the same everywhere: judge direction over 60 to 90 days and act on repetition, not on single readings.
The one thing volatility never explains away is a steady downtrend. Citations that keep not coming back are being genuinely displaced, and that is the cue to open the receipts and deploy a fix.
