What is the Ad Exposure Score?
The Ad Exposure Score estimates how exposed your tracked prompts are to sponsored placements inside AI answers. A high score means paid results are competing with organic citations on the prompts that matter to you.
AI engines are introducing ad formats, with ChatGPT ads the most visible example. That changes the value of a prompt: an answer that carries sponsored placements gives organic citations less room and less attention. The Ad Exposure Score reads your tracked prompts and estimates how exposed each one is to that pressure, rolled up into one number on the Your Score tab.
Commercial-intent prompts, the “best X” and “which should I buy” questions, attract ad formats first, which is exactly why Citably weights them in your prompt set. A high Ad Exposure Score usually means your most valuable prompts are the contested ones.
One honest boundary: the score measures the exposure of prompts to ad formats. It does not detect what any competitor spends on ads, and no tool credibly can. Treat it as a weather report for your prompt set, not surveillance of anyone’s budget.
What to do with it: on high-exposure prompts, make your organic position stronger than an ad can displace, deep content, interactive tools, and durable citations. And when Boost placements begin rolling out, the score will tell you exactly where paid intercepts would earn their keep.
Like every score metric, read it as a trend: rising exposure across weeks means your prompt set is drawing more commercial attention, and the prompts driving the rise are the ones to defend first.
