Why am I not cited for some prompts?
AI engines cite the sources they trust for each specific question, and for some prompts your site does not yet give them a citable answer. The fix is targeted: see which sources won the answer, then deploy content that answers that prompt better.
Four causes cover almost every miss. First, no answering page: nothing on your site directly answers the question the prompt asks, so the engine cannot quote you. Second, weaker sources: you have a page, but the engine trusts a competitor’s page, a comparison site, or a directory more for that question. Third, competitor dominance: a rival has built exactly the asset that engines prefer for that prompt, a calculator, a comparison table, a definitive guide. Fourth, missing signals: your business data is thin or inconsistent across the sources engines read, so they cannot confidently connect you to the question.
The diagnosis is in your scan, not in guesswork. Open the prompt’s receipt and read what the engine actually said, then check the Sources tab to see which domains fed that answer. Who got named, and what carried them, tells you which of the four causes you are looking at.
Then act on it directly: deploy an AEO article that answers the exact question, or an interactive tool when the winning asset in your category is functional rather than editorial. Re-scan after it is indexed and watch whether the prompt flips to Cited.
Prioritize by intent: a miss on a commercial prompt costs buyers today and deserves the first fix.
